Big Heavy World web site

Client: Big Heavy World

Big Heavy World is a nonprofit organization that helps promote local music in Vermont. They needed an interactive web site where users could add their band to their directory, post shows they’re playing, and upload music and photos.

Notes

The Big Heavy World web site was quite a complex project. This project tested my abilities in almost every area of web development. All of the code was custom PHP, JavaScript, XHTML, and CSS and I was also required to create several custom Flash components. In addition, a number of third-party applications were used in the web site, which had to be integrated with each other to create a seamless user experience, including phpBB, Wordpress, Google Maps API, and MediaWiki.

The organization had an existing web site that included a phpBB message board with over 3,000 users that they couldn’t lose. As a result, the web site was built off the current user base. Jim, the founder of Big Heavy World, gave me a list of features that he wanted incorporated into the new web site and it was up to me to create the entire system. The list included an events calendar, a wiki, listings of music related businesses in Vermont, and a section where users can manage their bands’ info, shows, music, and photos. All of this was manageable in a custom made administrative area.
